Unit 5:
Pen Perspective

Section 1: Inquiry Question and Concept Exploration

Inquiry Statement: How can perspective drawing techniques be used to invent a believable space that blends imagination with realism?

Perspective drawing techniques help create believable spaces by using rules like vanishing points, horizon lines, and scale to mimic how we see the real world. These tools make objects appear closer or farther away, adding depth and structure. When combined with imagination, artists can design entirely new environments that still feel realistic by following these visual principles. By carefully placing lines and adjusting proportions, even invented scenes become convincing, allowing viewers to feel like they could step into the space. This balance between accuracy and creativity is what makes perspective drawing so powerful in art. (96 words)

Stephen Wiltshire

  • Known for drawing detailed cityscapes entirely from memory after seeing them briefly

  • Has drawn cities like New York, Tokyo, and Rome with extreme accuracy

  • Diagnosed with autism, which contributes to his strong visual memory

  • Uses pen and ink to create highly precise, realistic architectural drawings

Techniques he uses:

  • Strong use of perspective (especially one-point and two-point)

  • Careful line control to show depth and detail

  • Repetition of shapes (windows, buildings) to create realism

  • Varying line thickness to suggest distance and shadows

What I can take inspiration from:

  • Combine imagination with real architectural elements

  • Focus on small details to make your drawing believable

  • Practice perspective grids before adding details

  • Be patient because drawings take time and layering

Section 3: Investigate

Visual evidence of material tests, alternate compositions, sketches.
